10 Dogs From Puerto Rico To Arrive At Potter League

Wings of Rescue flew the animals to New Jersey, where the Potter League staff is picking them up to arrive in Middletown on Tuesday night.

MIDDLETOWN, RI — Ten dogs from Puerto Rico are expected to arrive at Potter League on Tuesday night. The dogs are being rescued from the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. They are being flown into St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in New Jersey by the Humane Society of the United States. Wings of Rescue and www.greatergood.org donated the flight. Potter League staff is driving to New Jersey to pick them up and bring the animals to Rhode Island. They will arrive late Tuesday evening.

Earlier, the Potter League also took in some dogs from Texas after Hurricane Harvey as a member of HSUS’s Emergency Placement Partner Program which works to relocate pets to trusted partners across the country in the wake of disasters and large-scale animal cruelty cases.

“I was in Puerto Rico almost a year ago working with the wonderful shelters there to improve their operations. I met incredible people working hard for animals and it is devastating now to think that much of that work has been destroyed,” Executive Director of the Potter League Brad Shear, said. “I am glad that in a small way we are able to help these animals and help the shelters and people in Puerto Rico start to recover.”

The dogs will need to be in isolation for five days, as Rhode Island State law requires. All dogs will be spayed or neutered, up to date on their vaccinations and also microchipped, prior to adoption. They should be ready for adoption in about a week, pending medical and behavioral assessments.

The Potter League currently has many dogs and cats available for adoption, so we ask that anyone looking to help animals in need, to please consider giving a home to those currently up for adoption to make room for more Harvey animals. Please visit our website www.PotterLeague.org for more information about the Potter League, as well as a listing of all the animals we have available for adoption.

The aftermath of the powerful storm has resulted in a near-total shutdown of the U.S. territory’s economy that could last for weeks and has many people running seriously low on cash and worrying that it will become even harder to survive on this storm-ravaged island.
