Hurricane Sandy Risk Elevated For Area

Hurricane Sandy is reported to be growing in size, which poses a higher risk to Rhode Island.

 

 Early this morning the Middletown Emergency Management team reported Hurricane Sandy might have a greater impact on Rhode Island than previously anticipated.  The latest forecast shows the storm is growing in size as it approaches the northeast.

Sandy, a Category 1 hurricane, barreled through the Bahamas on Friday, killing at least 41 people.

Forecasters predict Sandy could make landfall on Monday night or Tuesday somewhere between North Carolina and southern New England.

The National Weather Service (NWS) predicts Hurricane Sandy could "bring strong to damaging winds, possibly hurricane force," to the region.  It predicts widespread power outages, high seas and storm surges of at least four feet that could result in severe beach erosion.
