MFD Rescues 'Loco' the Cat After Two Day Ordeal

A Middletown cat's unnerving, two day adventure came to an end, thanks to the assistance from the Middletown Fire Department.

The two-year-old feline, Loco, which appropriately means 'crazy' in Spanish, climbed to the top of a tree on the corner of  Newport Avenue and Ellery Avenue; and refused to come down.

One neighbor bravely attempted a rescue, but Loco had settled on a limb that was over 20 feet high, and was beyond reach of a ladder.

Although residents might feel hesitant to dial the fire department for a stranded pet, Middletown Fire Chief Ronald Doire says when in doubt, call.

"Middletown Firefighters can do this type of operation safely and help prevent a resident form possibly getting injured doing something beyond their training or experience," said Doire.  He said the department can still respond to an emergency call when out in the field.  The Chief added it can also be a good training opportunity for the department. 

Lucky for Loco, the Middletown Fire Department arrived quickly to the scene.  Captain Pete Faerber and Firefighter Jon Reese responded with Engine 1 and used a 24 foot ground ladder to reach the frightened feline.

Doire said Loco was quickly rescued, and was happy to be reunited with his family back on the ground.
