Sandy Shuts Down Middletown

Hurricane Sandy's winds and waves made an assertive introduction yesterday.  Throughout the day, we watched trees, power lines and the rest of autumn's leaves fall to the streets. Luckily, there were no reported injuries.

One house lost half its roof. 

Officials said conditions are still dangerous and to exercise common sense when traveling around Middletown.  The National Hurricane Center pronounced the Hurricane Sandy a “post-tropical” cyclone Monday evening after it hit land. Sandy continues to merge with what was once two cold weather systems. Forecasters do not anticipate the storm to have a quick exit.

As of 9 p.m. on Monday night National Grid reported 116,433 outages across Rhode Island. 29,509 customers in Newport County have been impacted, including 5,189 from Middletown.  National Grid is still assessing the conditions. 

Here is what to expect for today:

School Closings

• Middletown Public Schools will be closed on Tuesday
• All Saints Academy will be closed on Tuesday
• All Saints Academy, St. George's School, MET School will be closed on Tuesday

Roads closures (temporary closures)

• Wave Avenue
• Jepson Lane
• Beach access Roads
• Third Beach Road
• Hanging Rock
• Part of Memorial Blvd.
• Parking ban begins at midnight Monday

Other Closures

• Town Hall will have delayed open, unless conditions worsen. 
• The Middletown library and senior center will be closed.
