What's Open and Closed on Columbus Day

The Columbus Day federal holiday marks the arrival of explorer Christopher Columbus in North America on Oct. 12, 1492. Many communities also observe the holiday as a celebration of Italian-American heritage, such as the annual Columbus Day festival at St. Joseph's Church in Newport.

Federal, state and local municipal offices are closed, including schools. Businesses vary, so when in doubt call ahead.
