3 Cooling Centers Open In Narragansett, South Kingstown Amid Heatwave
See what days and times you can head to a cooling center to beat the heat.
NARRAGANSETT-SOUTH KINGSTOWN, RI — A scorching heatwave is expected to hit Rhode Island this week. Temperatures could reach 90 degrees, starting Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.
To help people stay cool during the heatwave, Narragansett and South Kings will both have cooling centers open.
In Narragansett, Maury Loontjens Memorial Library will serve as a cooling center. And in South Kingstown, residents can head to Peace Dale Library or the senior center to beat the heat.

Hours for the cooling centers can be found below:
- Maury Loontjens Memorial Library, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday
- Peace Dale Library, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday
- South Kingstown Senior Center, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
The Rhode Island Department of Help offered the following advice for times of extreme heat:

- Stay out of the direct sun.
- Try to stay in shaded areas.
- Pace yourself when you exercise.
- Schedule outdoor events early in the morning, when it is cooler and the air quality is better.
- Wear light-colored and light-weight clothing.
- Wear a hat with a brim and wear sunscreen for protection. Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol and caffeine.
- Use air conditioning or fans, windows, and shades or curtains to keep your house cool.
- Take cool showers or baths. Avoid cooking hot food indoors when the day is at its hottest.

- Never leave a child, pet, or older adults in an unattended car during periods of extreme heat.
