Police Have Possible ID on Narragansett Search

Items were located on the rocks off Hazard Avenue, which has been deemed an "area of interest."

NARRAGANSETT, RI — The U.S. Coast Guard and members of the Narragansett Bay Marine Task Force are searching the waters off Narragansett for a missing swimmer.

Police said Friday evening they believe the man could be 61-year-old Peter Butler. Luggage containing his passport was found in an “area of interest” on the rocks off Hazard Avenue.

Police called off the search for the night.

A man went missing around 6 p.m. Thursday, Narragansett Fire Cheif Scott M. Partington said in a Friday afternoon press conference.

Members of the Narragansett Bay Task Force, including crews from Portsmouth, the state Department of Environmental Management and the North Kingstown and Narragansett Fire Departments are scanning an area from the Dunes Club to Scarborough State Beach.
