Dead Humpback Washes Up on Block Island

The whale washed up sometime overnight on North Mansion Beach

NEW SHOREHAM, RI—A humpback whale washed up on North Mansion Beach on Block Island on Friday morning.

Members of the Block Island Conservancy shared pictures of the animal on Facebook and said that it appears to be a young whale.

It's not clear why the whale died.

And it's not the first time a humpback has been spotted in local waters. Last year, the North Kingstown Harbormaster captured images of what appeared to be a humpback whale breaching in Narragansett Bay.

That sighting followed a series of beluga whale sightings across the state last spring.
