DEM Office Out Of Beach Passes
Passes will still be available at 2010 rates through July 1 at state beach locations beginning May 28.
The Johnston headquarters of the Rhode island Department of Environmental Management sold out of beach passes at around 1 p.m. on May 26, but there's still hope for beachgoers who want to purchase them at 2010 rates.
All state beach locations will sell season parking passes at last year's rate of $30 from May 28 through July 1, Tom Rosa, DEM Seasonal Policy intern, said on Friday.
Rosa, who was outside the Johnston office turning away drivers seeking beach passes, estimated that the DEM location processed 5,300 permits over the last 12 days.
Rosa said the rush was a response to the state's planned fee increase on parking at state beaches.
Parking sticker applicants must apply in the vehicle to which the permit will be applied, Rosa added.
"We've been having big problems with that -- people show up in a different car" than the one they intend to take to the beach, he said.

Note: There is no online registration for beach passes.
