Narragansett Police Log: April 22, 23 and 24, 2011

Warwick Man Arrested for DWI, Mason Jar of Marijuana

James T. Branca, 19, of 21 Turtle Creek Drive, Warwick, was arrested at 11:56 p.m. on April 22 on a misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated and a felony charge of distributing a controlled substance.

According to police, an officer on patrol on Point Judith Road clocked a car driven by Branca at 67 miles per hour in a 45 mile per hour zone. A traffic stop was made on Point Judith Road as a result.

Police said Branca smelled of alcohol, and said he admitted to having a few beers at a friend’s house in Eastward Look. According to police, Branca failed a field sobriety test, at which point he was arrested.

Police said while arresting Branca, they noted a strong smell of marijuana coming from him as well. A search of his car revealed a mason jar full of marijuana, a digital scale and plastic bags. Based on this evidence, Branca was also charged with distribution of a controlled substance.

According to police, after making a private phone call Branca consented to a chemical breathe test. Police said his blood alcohol content tested at .170 in two tests.

North Kingstown Man Arrested for DWI, Refusal to Submit to Chemical Test

Christian M. Shemanski, 23, of 335 Shore Acres Ave., North Kingstown, was arrested at 1:47 a.m. on April 24 on charges of driving while intoxicated and refusing to submit to a chemical test.

According to police, an officer on patrol noted a gray Hyundai driven by Shemanski almost hit another car while driving from Boston Neck Road on to Bridgetown Road. Based on this, and a radar reading of 43 miles per hour in a 30 mile per hour zone, a traffic stop was made.

Police said Shemanski smelled strongly of alcohol, and that he admitted to drinking a six-pack of beer. According to police, he failed a field sobriety test, and after being arrested refused to submit to a chemical test.

No Arrests On A Saturday

Police reported no arrests on Saturday, April 23, which is National Sovereignty and Children’s Day in Turkey and Northern Cyprus.
