Narragansett Police Log: May 21, 22, 23 and 24, 2012

A South Kingstown man is cited for littering "just a cigarette" and a man finds seven mailboxes in his yard.

South Kingstown Man Cited for Littering “Just A Cigarette”

Walter J. Aubin, 19, of 10 Redberry Drive, South Kingstown, was cited at about 1 a.m. on May 22 and charged with littering.

According to police, an officer traveling behind a car on Mettatuxet Road saw it roll through a stop sign without making a complete stop. As a result, the officer followed the car, and noted the driver flick a lit cigarette out the window.

A traffic stop was made Mettatuxet Road past Twinleaf Trail. When asked about the littering, the driver – Aubin – allegedly told police, “It’s just a cigarette, no big deal.”

Police said that while speaking with Aubin, he smelled of marijuana, and he told police that he had recently been arrested for possession. As a result, police searched his car with negative results, seizing just a grinder with trace amounts.

Aubin was cited for failing to stop at a stop sign, and for littering.

URI Student Cited for Suspended License

Aaron B. Shatkin, 21, of 316 Robin Hollow Road, West Greenwich, was cited at about 1:55 a.m. on May 23 and charged with driving with a suspended license. Police said Shatkin is a student at the University of Rhode Island.

According to police, an officer driving on Sewell Road saw a white Cadillac Escalade traveling without a rear license plate light. A traffic stop was made in the 600-section of Ocean Road.

Police said a background check of the driver – Shatkin – revealed that his license had been suspended. He was cited, and a passenger was allowed to drive the car from the scene. Shatkin was also warned for the defective license plate light.

Seven Mailboxes for Seven Homes

At about 6:30 a.m. on May 23, police received a report of vandalized mailboxes on Cedar Island Road.

Police said the caller, a 46-year-old Narragansett man, awoke that morning to find seven mailboxes in his front yard from nearby homes on Cedar Island Road and Viburnum Road. He told police that he did not know why they were put in his yard.

Police documented the case for informational purposes. The man told police that he would return the mailboxes, because he was involved with the Harbor Island Association.
