Narragansett Residents Part of ‘An Afternoon of Timeless Music’

WAKEFIELD – The Wakefield Concert Band is pleased to present the fourth annual benefit concert, An Afternoon of Timeless Music, 2 p.m. Sunday at .

Committed to strengthening civic partnerships through music, the band this year hopes to raise funds for specialized equipment to help patients in the Intensive Care Unit of South County Hospital. The Wakefield Concert Band is dedicating this performance in memory of Narragansett resident Donald Ford, who was president of the hospital from 1958 to 1986.

“Last year we raised more than $8,000 for the hospital and our goal this year is to double that amount,” band director Barry Lieberman said. “We are especially pleased that NBC Channel 10ʼs Jim Taricani has offered to emcee the event once again.”

Also part of the band are Narragansett residents Diana and Steve McLaughlin. Diana plays tuba and Steve plays saxophone, which must make life interesting for their toddler, according to a fellow band member.

The band is also excited that Anthony Maiello will serve as guest conductor and soloist.

The South County Hospital benefit concert will feature classics, Broadway show tunes and rousing marches from composers Felix Mendelssohn, Richard Rodgers and John Philip Sousa. This is music the whole family will enjoy.

Tickets are available at the door or in advance by calling (401) 294-7101, or by contacting any band member. The suggested donation is $10 for adults and teens, and children under 12 are free. Please plan to arrive early to view, and to enjoy a chance to win the many valuable raffle items donated by local businesses and individuals.

The Wakefield Concert Band, founded in the late 1890s, has been playing music throughout Rhode Island for more than a century. Band members come from all walks of life and have diverse musical backgrounds but play with one singular goal: to encourage community cultural enrichment and foster musical enjoyment.

From holiday concerts to the summer concert series in Marina Park, the 75-piece Wakefield Concert Band has earned a well-deserved reputation entertaining audiences throughout Rhode Island.

Barry Lieberman, a retired music director and teacher from Bedford, NY, has been the Director of the Wakefield Concert Band since 2000.
