Narragansett Town Council Needs To Uphold Zoning , Building Ordinances and Rental Laws

The NTC Needs to Take Measures to Mitigate and Not Exacerbate Issues Related To Our Sewer System, Water Shortage, and Rental Issues

If the Narragansett Town Council Condones the condition of Mr. Durkin's Property at 87 Narragansett, Ave by failing to address the issue, It Will Put All Renters at Risk that Have to Live In a Similar Environment Where the Owner Has Failed to Make the Needed Repairs to His/her property, and the Town Council will ignore your concerns. If they do not address this issue, that in itself should be telling you how they feel about requiring a rental owner to provide a humane place for one to rent. Would any of the Town Council Members want to be subjected to living in such an environment as seen in the video that is posted below that has well over 3000 views in the several days it has been posted? Our Town Council ran in this election on transparency. How transparent is our Town Council if they are failing to address the issue of a sitting Town Council member who has not maintained his hotel which was a house that became a converted hotel. Mr. Durkin and the Town Council recommend we put a covering around our sewer system to mask out the smell instead of addressing the real problem of the sewer system working over its capacity due to too much crap being pumped into it. We can also experience sewer seepage in our water system, so we may eventually have to either boil our water or buy bottled water. I for one would not want to boil or buy bottled water or take a shower in water that is unsafe to drink. Rather than saying we have to impose more restrictions on developers from building, this Town Council is pushing more building by developers by loosening zoning ordinances that will exacerbate our sewer problems and our water shortage issues. Is Failing to impose zoning ordinances that will make it more difficult for developers to build at will without any restrictions going to mitigate problems with our sewer system and the water shortage? Is the Narragansett’s Town Council push to make previously unbuildable lots buildable going to help our sewer system and water shortage? Is allowing landowners to unmerge their merged lots, so 2 lots can be created from 1 lot, so you can have a developer build two rentals where there was a vacant lot going to help our sewer system and water shortage? Is increasing the FAR, which is the Floor Area Ratio that is the ratio of the area of a property to the lot size, that will allow bigger houses on any size lot going to help our sewer system and water shortage? Will opening the flood gates for developers so developers can build bigger homes on an existing size lot that will be used for rentals help families afford to buy homes in Narragansett when families are being outbid - priced out by investors, so they can make a killing on rentals going to help our sewer system and water shortage? Will the Town of Narragansett elected and appointed officials going to be able to regulate the number of people in a house or a so-called hotel when Mr. Durkin's hotel that was a house at one time and had the hotel rented out to 27 cultural exchange students this summer? Would any of you want to live in Mr. Durkin's hotel on 87 Narragansett Ave? If you have concerns about the future of the Narragansett School System, then do you support the Town Council's actions that will bring fewer and fewer families to Narragansett, so we will have fewer and fewer children going to our School System? If you are a renter in a house, you too need to be concerned, as you will have little recourse if the Town Council condones Mr. Durkin's failure to provide a healthy environment for those he rents out to. You can stop the above crises by voting in the recall of our Town Council. All rentals really need to be inspected. The Town Building Inspector needs to inspect all short-term rentals once per year to examine the conditions of the rentals in order to make sure the rentals have humane living conditions, and all plumbing and appliances are fully operational. An examination for lead paint for the older houses needs to also be reviewed and the property needs the proper lead clearance certificate. An examination also needs to be conducted to make sure there is NO mold in the rental. We also need to have the fire department inspect the rentals to make sure the fire alarms are fully functional. I feel the above should NOT only be done in the Town of Narragansett, but it needs to be done throughout the State of Rhode Island. If our elected leaders really care about our residents, they will take steps to protect the most vulnerable. We can all see the Washington Bridge Fiasco and what has happened when our elected leaders failed to be proactive to prevent the failure of the bridge. Let us NOT forget what happened in the Station Night Club Fire when building codes were NOT enforced. A Failure to Stand Up for What is Right, Shows Support for of the Failing Actions of What is Happening.
