Several Shellfishing Areas Closed In RI Amid Heavy Rain, Floods

Monday and Tuesday's heavy rains have slowed traffic, caused a building to collapse and have now temporarily shutter shellfishing.

RHODE ISLAND — Several shellfishing areas closed in Rhode Island Tuesday because of heavy rains and flooding in the Providence metropolitan area.

The closures affected Upper Narragansett Bay area A, Upper Narragansett Bay area B and Lower Providence River area E. They are scheduled to reopen at noon, Sept. 16, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management said Tuesday.

Greenwich Bay, Mount Hope Bay, the Kickemuit River, the West Middle Bay shellfish area (GA9), and the East Middle Bay shellfish area (GA3) are also closed to shellfishing until noon, Sept. 13. The emergency closures include waters of Narragansett Bay north of a line running from approximately Quonset Point in North Kingstown to the northern tip of Conanicut Island (Jamestown) to the southern tip of Prudence Island to Carr Point in Portsmouth.
