Should the Town of Narragansett Hold Mr. Durkin Accountable for his hotel in Disrepair? You Decide
I conducted a tour of the property at 87 Narragansett Ave. The owner was contacted to make needed repairs. You Decide?

Some have questions why the students failed to report the issues at the house owned by our Town Council Pro Temp, Mr. James Durkin to the authorities. The students were cultural exchange students. They were NOT from the United States. Students felt the company that arranges them to get over here and even Stop and Shop or even the owner could make life difficult for them. Could they be labeled as troublemakers? I am sure the college students knew Mr. James Durkin is a Town Council Member. College student are very intelligent and resourceful. While the students did follow their chain of command by reporting the situation to Stop and Shop, and Stop and Shop could not get Mr. Durkin to take corrective action, the students felt their hands were tied. With Mr. Durkin being a President ProTemp on the Narragansett Town Council, many would feel even more intimidated to report him than an ordinary landlord. Many people who rent out are between a rock and a hard place with even a regular landlord, as they feel they have nowhere to turn. Many have limited income. There was one local family that had to raise money, so they would not be evicted from their landlord. The family had children. Some landlords act in disregard to the hardships people are facing. If our Town authorities do not inspect rentals, many people can be living in inhumane conditions. In my opinion, with Mr. Durkin being on the Narragansett Town Council, many who rent from him will be very intimidated to speak out. Some of the reviews of Mr. Durkin Cottages online are less than flattering, and you can all check them our yourselves. Now with the video, we can see or at least I can see some of those reviews are justified in my opinion, but you ALL can make your own decision. As a Town Council Member all your actions need to be above board. If you are a Town Council Member who owns more property than anyone else in Narragansett and you fail to maintain your property, then that is frightening to me. I feel, in my opinion, if Mr. James Durkin is allowed to get away with the reported incident, it will be SETTING the Town up for a dangerous precedent. Many people not only in Narragansett, but throughout RI, may feel if Mr. James Durkin can get away with having a rental in disrepair, what is the recourse for other renters who are living in a rental where the landlord is failing to make the needed repairs. Anyone in authority, from a landlord, teacher, judge (and in many ways those serving on our Town Council) are quasi-judges and bosses for the appointed leaders in Narragansett. They can fire anyone who goes against them who may not be under a contract. And they can remove any committee member who is NOT in agreement with their directives. All Town Council Members need to hold themselves to a higher accountability. Our Town Council can remove dedicated servants at the whim of a vote. Our Town Council can fire any of the Narragansett Staff such as our Town Solicitor, Town Planner, and others to carry out their own objectives. And if a complaint on a rental gets brought to the attention of the Town of Narragansett, with a sitting Town Council Member being President ProTemp, the Council could try to sweep it under the rug and tell the building inspector not to act, or the Town should not go after one of its own. Working in Corrections for many years and involved with politics, I am well aware of the Good Old Boy and Girl Network where people have suffered due to the Powers That Be not doing the right thing to stop the wrong going on. We will NOW have to see if our Town Council will remain silent on this issue or will take action. The video I produced several days ago has close to 4000 views, so this issue is NOT going away. It is Time for our Town of Narragansett to START inspecting rentals, we START enforcing limits on the number of people renting in a house. Allowing 3 grown people to sleep in just one bedroom is wrong to me. And in the house I videotaped, we could see 3 sleeping in one room. The fire department was called at the house for a faulty alarm system. Was this documented? Was a report written for Mr. Durkin to correct the issue? If we fail to act, we act to fail. When we do nothing in the face of a wrong, we are condoning a wrong. Please watch the video if you have not seen it. In my opinion, Mr James Durkin should be forced to resign from the Narragansett Town Council, or we should vote him out of office on the recall. When someone in power has failed to comply with the minimum housing standards for rentals he owns, then he should no longer be a Narragansett Town Council Member. In the below Podcast, it will explain on how people of power can abuse their power. If our Town Council continues to support Mr. James Durkin, then they should be voted out on the recall. I was inducted to the Knights of the Rockingham Arch for fighting for what is right in Narragansett, and I intend to do that. No one should be allowed to abuse their power of authority. Mr. James Durkin recommended we put a covering over our sewage treatment center to stop the smell rather than addressing the real issue in that it is being used over capacity as a result of too much crap being inundated due to our rental situation. This Town Council rather than addressing the real issue and stating we NEED to START enforcing existing ordinances and NOT allow anyone to violate them, and we need to fight against increasing housing density to mitigate the inflow of crap and taxing our infrastructure, our Town Council is PUSHING to eliminate virtually all the ordinances that were in the books for years, and increase the FAR, so people can build bigger houses on any piece of land and that will exacerbate the problem with our sewer system. The Town Council wants to make unbuildable lots buildable, and unmerge vacant lots, so 2 lots can be made from one existing lot. This is a recipe for failure. People may say, this is NOT in my backyard, so I can care less. We ALL will be adversely affected. With the sewer system overflowing with crap, we can have sewer seepage. Do all of you want to have to boil your water or buy boiled water? Do you want to shower with high bacteria in it? Do you want to not be able to go in the Ocean because of the high bacteria count? Do you want our school system to close down due to having too few families in Narragansett. The President of a Powerful Rental Organization, Mr. George Nonis became upset with me because I banned him from my social media pages. He wrote me an email saying he was going to report me. He must feel intimidated by me for speaking the truth. I hope you all will take the time to vote in the recall this upcoming Wednesday. If you all support a town council member who has neglected his tenants, and he may continue to do so if he remains in office and he is not sanctioned by the town as he will feel he is untouchable, then do not vote in the recall. However, you all have a chance to remove Mr. James Durkin and ALL town council members who support and enable him. Do we want THIS to happen in Narragansett with our renters in Narragansett and throughout the State of RI. We need to protect some of our most vulnerable. Our Town Council Members can fight the DICTATES of the State through the Enabling Act and Home Rule. We can ENFORCE our existing ordinances; we can put a STOP on increasing building density. Please keep in mind THIS town council is appointing people to DRIVE their agenda at ALL COSTS to all of us, and our environment. Many our politically connected like Mr. DeSimone and Mr. Cravin our Assistant Town Solicitor who is pushing the State to increase the building density. We all heard the outcry of those smelling the crappy situation from the sewer system in the Eastward Look Area. Now we can all witness the outcry of two young college girls in Mr. James Durkin's rental. Here is a Podcast you all may be interested in listening to. It is called Vanish. A young girl had nowhere to turn when a person in power felt he was untouchable.
