Structure Fire in SK, Outages Across State

According to emergency alert systems, there is a two-alarm fire at Champagne Heights in South Kingstown.

Monday's thunderstorms have left 14,000 customers across the state without power and has knocked out two substations, according to The Providence Journal, and there is currently a two-alarm fire in South Kingstown, according to notification alerts.

According to alerts and a tip from a reader, the fire is at the Champagne Heights housing project at 364 Curtis Corner Road. There is reportedly heavy smoke and fire coming from two buildings, and multiple departments are responding.

National Grid is still trying to determine the severity of the damage to the two substations – one in Johnston and another in Barrington. The former of the two serves a large section of Providence. Earlier Monday morning, the State House was evacuated after a power surge set off a fire alarm.

The hardest hit area is Barrington, with 4,700 of the town's 6,810 customers are without power. In Providence, 4,265 are powerless with another 1,943 in Johnston and 1,864 in North Providence.

However, at least as of 11:45 a.m. Monday, power outages are limited in South County. There are less than 50 customers affected.
