Alleged Copper Thief Arrested For Breaking Into Cars

A 26-year-old man, who allegedly stole copper downspouts from at least 16  Newport homes in the spring, was arrested Sunday after he allegedly broke into cars with a 26-year-old woman.

Anthony Hendricksen, of 15 Meeting Street, was charged with larceny, receiving stolen goods and for possession of burglary tools, a felony. Kathryn Crowell, of an unknown address, was charged with receiving stolen goods and conspiracy.

When police arrived after a witness called to report the alleged thefts around Corne Street and Mill Street, Hendricksen opened a trash can and pretended to vomit, said police. A new pair of of running shoes was later found in the trash. A wallet that recently went missing from a car was found in Crowell’s bra, said police. 

Police found a crowbar and a wire hanger on Hendricksen.  He allegedly told police, “I’m homeless and I needed the cash.”
