Amid Frigid Temps, Warming Shelters Open In Newport

Due to the current coronavirus surge, capacity is limited at the city's warming shelters.

NEWPORT, RI — The coldest temperatures so far this season have arrived, bringing wind chills below zero to the City By The Sea.

Because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and recent surge in cases, capacity and hours are limited at the city's two warming shelters. Residents can warm up at both the Newport Public Library and the Seaman's Church Institute. Hours are listed below.

  • Tuesdays-Thursdays 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
  • Fridays-Saturdays 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Hours of Operation

  • Wednesday to Sunday: 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Limited to 5 people at a time
