Beat the Heat in Newport

Monday is expected to be the first of three days of warm temps and high humidity.

The Forecast: Monday's high temp could reach the lower 90s in Newport, with high humidity and unhealthy ozone levels, according to the National Weather Service. An air quality advisory has also been issued.

Where To Cool Down: Newport Public Library, Redwood Library [which also has a Children's Library], and Park Holm Senior Center are a few places where you can get in from the heat — and see some of your neighbors. Now that it's really summer, you can also pick up a town or state beach pass and hit the waves.

If You Must Drive: Check out these tips on the RI DEM's website for folks who have to take their own wheels — and don't forget: RIPTA bus services are free today due to the air quality alert in effect.

Stay Cool: The Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency has posted a heat advisory for today. Here's a handy list of tips on how to stay cool. Basically: Drink lots of fluids (not alcohol), stay out of the sun, and don't work too hard if you are outdoors.
