Boy Hurt in Scooter Crash Listed in Stable Condition, Woman Critical

A 37-year-old woman and a 10-year-old boy were badly hurt after a the scooter they were riding crashed on Ocean Avenue on Sunday.

NEWPORT, RI—A 10-year-old boy who suffered severe injuries in a scooter crash on Ocean Avenue in Newport on Sunday is now in stable condition at Hasbro Children's Hospital.

The woman driving the scooter, a 37-year-old woman identified by police as the fiancee of the boy's father, is in critical condition at Rhode Island Hospital.

Both were hurt after the three-wheel scooter rolled onto its side before flipping over, according to a police report.

Witnesses told police that the woman driving the scooter lost control and swerved into the opposite lane before hitting the rear quarter panel of a car traveling in the opposite direction. Both were ejected from the scooter and witnesses stopped and tried to help as rescue personnel rushed to the scene.

One witness said that the woman was badly injured "but kept asking how the boy was," according to the report. The boy lay on the ground with a head wound and was unresponsive at first but began to regain consciousness and began to cry.

The boy's father was driving ahead of them on a different scooter with another child. He told police that he didn't witness the crash but heard the impact and looked back to see what it was and pulled over.

Fire officials said the family is from out of town and was visiting Newport.
