Suspicious Package That Shut City Hall 'Turned Out To Be Nothing'

Newport City Hall was evacuated Tuesday around 3 p.m. due a report of a suspicious package. Employees were sent home and the building was closed for the remainder of the afternoon.

"All we can say at this time is it turned out to be nothing," said Newport Fire Chief Peter Connerton Tuesday evening.

According to the Newport Police Department, a package was reported as suspicious, but the contents were empty.
