Fatal Newport Fire Victim Identified

Luke Walker was known internationally for his skill restoring vintage Indian motorcycles.

NEWPORT, RI—Police identified the victim of a fatal fire in a Newport industrial building on Tuesday as Luke W. Walker, 57, of Middletown.

Police said they're still working with the state Fire Marshals Office and the Newport Fire Marshal to determine the cause.

"We would like to extend our condolences to the family of Mr. Walker during this very difficult time," said Newport Police Sgt. Corey A. Huck in a news release.

Walker was well known on Aquidneck Island and around the world for his work restoring vintage Indian motorcycles in the space he rented at 62 Halsey St., where he died.

He was also known as a survivor who recovered from being struck by a car in front of Newport Creamery in Middletown in 2013. He lost part of his leg and had to learn to walk again as he embarked on a long road to recovery.
