FYI: It's Sgt. Greg Belcher Now

NEWPORT, RI—A Newport police officer at the forefront of the department's community policing initiatives has just been promoted to the rank of sergeant.

Formerly Officer and now Sgt. Greg Belcher was promoted and sworn in by City Clerk Laura Swistak at City Hall.

Belcher is a member of the department's community policing unit, which spends as much, if not more time solving problems, meeting with residents and finding proactive ways to fight crime by engaging with the public.

Recently, Belcher led the launch of a Police Explorers program, which gives young people 14 to 20 a chance to get a first-hand look at a career in law enforcement.
