Man Drunkenly Crashes Moped With Baby As Passenger: Newport Police

Newport police say Charles Fenwick, 31, had an 18-month-old child with him when he crashed his moped into a parked car.

NEWPORT, RI — Newport police said they arrested a man Sunday who drunkenly crashed a moped with a 1-year-old passenger.

Around 9:30 p.m., emergency officials were called to Spring Street at Dixon Street for a report of a crash involving a moped and a parked car with no one inside. When officers arrived, they found Charles Fenwick, 31, laying on the ground with a leg injury, police said. A witness was holding n 18-month-old child, who was a passenger on the moped.

Emergency personnel brought the child to Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence for treatment. Fenwick was taken to Newport Hospital before being transferred to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence.

Fenwick was charged with child endangerment, DUI resulting in serious bodily injury, reckless driving and refusal to submit to a chemical test.

As of Friday morning, Fenwick was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Rhode Island Hospital. The 18-month-old is in stable condition at Hasbro Children’s Hospital, police said.
