Newport Cops Looking for Stabbing Suspect

Dandre L. Russ stabbed a Portsmouth man last week in Newport and is wanted on a felony assault charge, police said.

NEWPORT, RI—Newport police are looking for a man with numerous prior drug-related offenses in connection with last week's stabbing that hospitalized a 24-year-old Portsmouth man.

Dandre L. Russ, 25, is wanted in connection with with the June 13 assault and anyone with information is asked to call Newport police at 401-847-1214.

Police said the victim is recovering from the injuries he sustained after being stabbed in the early morning hours near Farewell Street and Broadway.

Court records show Russ has four prior convictions for felony drug possession and distribution and a conviction for breaking and entering dating back to 2010. Of the more than 25 years in prison he was sentenced to in total, he has served about a year-and-a-half behind bars. The remainder was suspended with probation.

In 2013, Russ was caught up in a drug sweep by the Newport Police Department's SWAT team at the Festival Field Apartment Complex.
