Newport Flag Day: View From The Bridge

Nick Freischlag captured this photo of the flag from the Newport Pell Bridge on Flag Day.

NEWPORT, RI — The Newport Bridge's first flag was raised on Memorial Day; and as Patch readers may remember, Old Glory had to be taken down quickly when state officials discovered a tear in the flag. The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority apologized but promised to continue with the plan to fly the flag from the Mount Hope and Newport Pell bridges on future holidays. When Flag Day rolled around Thursday, it made good on the promise.

Yesterday, after the flag was raised on the bridge, Nick Freischlag shot this photograph. He caught the image through his sunroof. He was sitting in traffic, happened to look up, and saw a great image.

Almost a year ago, RITBA raised a flag on the Mount Hope Bridge to celebrate July 4. It was such as success, the state made the plan to fly the flag on various holidays from both the Mount Hope and the Newport Pell bridges.
