Police said they believed McCray was armed with a semiautomatic pistol, so when officers located his vehicle, they initiated "high risk car stop procedures." Officers successfully detained McCray and seized an undisclosed amount of marijuana, a machete, and a 9mm semiautomatic pistol, police said.

"I would like to thank members of the Newport Police Department who are spending time away from their families this Thanksgiving to ensure quality police service to the citizens of Newport," Police Chief Ryan Duffy said Thursday. "Thank you Officer Sullivan, Officer Horwood, Officer Clarizio, Officer Vachon, Officer Warner, Det. Sardinha, Det. Poplawski, Sgt. Sellers, and Sgt. Wuest for your work in this case today. We are thankful to have dedicated professionals like yourselves committed to the safety of the city."
