Newport Man Charged with Embezzlement from Employer

A 23-year-old city man allegedly stole cash from Cilantro Mexican Grill on Connell Highway in a crime caught on camera.

NEWPORT, RI—A 23-year-old city man has been charged with embezzlement—and lost his job—after being caught allegedly stealing money from his employer.

Newport police charged Joshua Anthony, 23, of 7 Sgt. Green Way, Newport, with one count of felony embezzlement after he stole $250 from the business office at Cilantro Mexican Grill on Connell Highway.

According to a police report, Anthony was caught on camera as he went into the business office and took money three separate times on Sunday during his shift. The restaurant's general manager reported the crime on Sunday afternoon after discovering money was stolen.

Anthony was arrested after turning himself in to police Sunday night. He reportedly apologized and offered to pay back the money.

He was due to be arraigned on Monday morning in Second Division District Court.
