Newport Police Bring Down Gunman

The following incident was reported by the Newport Police Department.


Newport police confirmed a man was arrested at gunpoint on Tuesday afternoon after a witness reported he was waving around a gun in the Park Holm neighborhood.

Tyquan Mitchell, 21, was charged with license or permit required for having a pistol, possession of arms by someone who is convicted in a crime of violence and felony drug possession. Mitchell was previously convicted of a felony drug charge.

According to a witness, Mitchell was upset that someone was having an affair with the mother of his child and was waving around the gun. Mitchell was brought down by multiple officers at gunpoint near Miantonomi Park. There were no injuries reported.

Police also allegedly found narcotics on Mitchell.
