Newport Police Log: 5 Weekend Arrests

The following is based on reports from the Newport Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Saturday

James R. Bartlett, 47, of 8 Spring St., Newport, was arrested around 4:54 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23, for an active warrant and a driving without a license charge.

Sunday

Domestic assault

Michael T. Scott, 22, of Newport, was arrested around 3:35 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 24, for a domestic simple assault charge.

Police were dispatched to Catherine Street for a report of a man and woman fighting in the street.

The victim told police she was taking her shoe off to fight Scott when he punched her, reports said.

Shoplifting, warrant 

Ryan M. Dennis, 19, of 140 Van Zandt Ave., Newport, was arrested around 4:45 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 24, for a shoplifting charge and an active warrant.

Dennis was arrested after a loss prevention officer from Stop & Shop saw him allegedly try to walk out of the store with $246 worth of food. When the officer tried to stop him, Dennis reportedly fled.

Police found Dennis outside Festival Field. He had a warrant for failure to appear in court.

Simple assault

Michael B. Anderson, 47, of 15 Meeting St., Newport, was arrested around 7:15 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 24, for a simple assault charge. Anderson reportedly tried to choke another man during an argument.

Monday

Ernest G. Jones, 61, of 40 Freebody St., Newport, was arrested around 1 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 25, for an attempted breaking and entering charge.

Police were following up on a previous breaking and entering investigation when they found Jones asleep in an abandoned apartment. He matched the description of the man who reportedly broken in to another residence and was sleeping in the hallways.

A witness confirmed that Jones had been the one who had broken the window the night before, reports said.
