Newport Police Log: Car Trouble, Shoplifting and DUI Arrests
The following is based on reports from the Newport Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Mark H. McVay, 53, of 118 Harrison Ave., Newport, was arrested around 8:07 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21, for a driving without consent of owner charge.
Police were dispatched for a report of a stolen vehicle. A woman told police that McVay, her business partner and roommate, had taken her car without her permission. She said he had been staying at the Harborside Inn for the past week.
Police found McVay at the inn. Reports said McVay first told police that he took the car to do laundry and other errands. He later changed his story and said that a friend’s son had been driving him around.

Shoplifting arrest
Joao M. Pedro, 67, of 17 Keeher Ave., Newport, was arrested around 1:45 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21, for a shoplifting charge.

Police were dispatched to Walmart for a report that Pedro was seen taking tags and cases from several items and putting them in his pockets.
After questioning, he removed a pair of sunglasses and three tubes of epoxy glues from his pockets and a watch from his wrist.
DUI arrest
Lars W. Klische, 40, of 55 Glenugien Rd., Pinetown, South Africa, was arrested around 1:57 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 22, for DUI and driving with an expired license chargese.
