Newport Woman, 18, Held Without Bail after Back-to-Back Arrests

Kayla Berryhill, 18, was arrested on domestic charges, released, and arrested again hours later after she sent text messages to the victim.

NEWPORT, RI—An 18-year-old Newport woman was charged with domestic vandalism and assault charges on Tuesday for allegedly assaulting her mother and breaking a picture frame because she was upset her car needed a brake job.

Police said Kalya Marie Berryhill, of 66 Girard Ave., was arrested a second time later Tuesday after she sent text messages to the victim in violation of a no-contact order issued earlier in the day.

According to a police report, police arrested Berryhill at around 10:15 a.m. for the alleged vandalism and assault.

She was later released on $1,000 personal recognizance and was to spend the night at a hotel in Middletown.

Police responded to the hotel at around 6 p.m. after the victim told police that she received texts that were from Berryhill.

Ultimately, Berryhill was held overnight at police headquarters for arraignment on Wednesday where she was ordered held without bail as a violator until a June 28 status conference in Second Division District Court.
