
After the Newport Fire Department responded to two minor oven fires Friday night and early Saturday morning, officials remind residents to use caution in the kitchen. Cooking equipment is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries in the United States, according to the U.S. Fire Administration,
No injuries or property damage were reported.
The first call was to the Park Holm area Friday night for an oven fire. The resident left a pot inside the oven and turned it on self cleaning, said fire officials. The pot handle melted, which caused significant smoke, but no additional damage.

The department then responded to another fire on Third Street around 5 a.m. Saturday morning. Papers reportedly caught flames next to a stove burner.
Luckily, both fires were quickly extinguished.
