Put 'Em Up: Newport Boxfit Offers New Workout in Town
A hard-hitting new workout program is coming to the Boys and Girls Club this week.
A hard-hitting new workout program is coming to the Boys and Girls Club this week.
Starting tonight, Feb. 6, Newport Boxfit co-founders Jesse Macrae and Andrew Menton will be whipping people into shape twice a week in the downstairs studio.
“We are offering a unique training style that is one of the most demanding yet rewarding workouts around,” Menton said.

Macrae, a passionate boxer who recently immigrated to the United States and is originally from New Zealand, said he was shocked when he realized that there was little offered in the way of boxing on the island. Instead of leaving the island, Macrae and Menton, his rugby teammate, decided to start their own program right here at home.
Macrae has been involved with boxing for 15 years and started to keep up with the physical demands of playing rugby. Menton has been working the marketing end of Newport Boxfit, spreading the word and drumming up interest for the classes.

The pair said they hope to create a trend for boxing fitness, or boxfit for short, in the Newport community as a fun and effective way to get and stay in shape. Members of the class do not have person-on-person contact and all equipment needed to participate is provided.
"We want people to walk away from this class and feel like they have truly been tested both physically and mentally. There will be some tough times during this class where you will need to draw on not just your physical strength but also your mental strength to push you through the workout," he said.
The class incorporates the fundamentals of boxing, such as skipping, shadow boxing, pad work and core work.
Menton said the best part of boxfit is that attendees do not need to have any boxing experience to participate. People of all fitness levels are encouraged to benefit from the hour-long class, which focuses on increasing strength, balance, coordination, and cardiovascular fitness through interval training.
"If you are a fitness fanatic and are in great shape you will punch harder and faster and work harder at each exercise. If you are just starting out and you are looking to improve your fitness you can push yourself through each exercise and notice the increase in speed, power and fitness as time goes on."
Menton and Macrae said another benefit of Newport Boxfit is that the class offers the experience of having a personal trainer without the hefty price tag one-on-one training often comes with.
"Most people like to be pushed when they workout but struggle to do this unless they have a personal trainer. . .People will feed of each other and push each other throughout the class."
Regular rates are $10 per class. Newport Boxfit is offering an introductory rate of $5 this week.
