Officer Kicked in Knee, Girlfriend's Car Vandalized

The following arrests were reported by the Newport and Middletown Police Departments. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.


Newport Woman Allegedly Kicks Middletown Officer in Knee

Jennifer O’Hanley, 37, of 14 Gilroy St., Newport, was arrested on Saturday by Middletown police on charges of  driving under the influence, simple assault, and resisting arrest.  She was also cited with refusal to submit to a chemical test.  

Police were called to 2 Plymouth Ave. around 6:09 p.m. for a report of a domestic disturbance. She allegedly told police she came to get her husband to go to their child’s birthday party, but he refused as they were going through a divorce.  O’Hanley appeared to be intoxicated, said police.

Police asked O’Hanley to wait by her car, but she started the car and drove it up Plymouth Avenue, side-swiping her husband’s truck.  She failed field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest, said police.

When police attempted to put her in handcuffs she tried to pull away and begged officers to let her go, said police. Police they had to force her into the cruiser and she kicked the middle glass of the police car and an officer's knee. The officer was treated at Newport Hospital for injuries.

Woman's Car Allegedly Vandalized by Boyfriend

Matthew Costello, 38, of 30 Channing St was arrested on Monday around 1:30 a.m. for domestic vandalism of a malicious injury to property and a violation of a no contact order.  The owner of the car told police she believed her boyfriend had vandalized her car, which was on Spring Street.  At Costello’s house, he allegedly admitted he used a knife to puncture her tires after a night of drinking.  He also said he took several prescription pills and was unable to keep his eyes open, said police.  Newport Fire Department responded and took Costello to Newport Hospital.

A 16-year old Newport boy was arrested on around 2:50 p.m. on Monday on charges of vandalism and disorderly conduct.  He allegedly screamed and swore at his Grandmother and punched a hole in her laundry room door.
