Oh Deer, It's Time to Watch for Antlers in Newport

Deer are being seen more and more along area roads this time of year. Drive carefully!

By Sandy McGee

Oh deer. It's been a slow drive along Burma Road in at night lately.

Just last week, a small herd of about 10 to 12 deer were seen on a grassy side of Burma Road near Greene Lane in Middletown. On Tuesday night, three young doe were spotted not far from the Carr Recreational Area.

While deer hunting season has already begun on Prudence Island (Oct. 19 to Jan. 31), deer are appearing more and more along area roadways.

We asked Newport Patch Facebook users where they've seen deer in Middletown lately. Here's what they had to say:

While it's great to see these natural animals out and about, drivers need to be careful. This Monday, a vehicle operated by Elizabeth Camara of Taunton, MA, struck a deer on West Main Road near Raytheon, reports The Portsmouth Times

No injuries were reported. The deer was reportedly not found.

Deer hunting season by shotgun begins on Dec. 7 (except for Prudence Island). Archery and muzzleloader hunting has already begun.
