Party Planned For Newport Bridge's 50th: RITBA

Time flies. The Newport Bridge in 2019 will celebrate its 50th anniversary. A party is planned.

NEWPORT, RI — The state Turnpike and Bridge Authority plans to throw a party in June to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Newport Bridge. According to a press release, June 28, 1969 was the day the bridge opened to traffic. Frank Licht was governor. Claiborne Pell, whose name later got added to the bridge, was U.S. Senator. They attended the opening, but this party will be a year-long event, RITBA said.

Expect "a jubilee dinner, a bridge rededication ceremony, a 1969 Antique Car Show/Bridge crossing and historical exhibits," the agency said, plus a “Top of the Tower Experience.”

"A few lucky winners will be able to ascend to one of the support towers of the bridge and take in the spectacular views. This will be the first time in the bridge’s history this opportunity will be made available to the public," RITBA said.
