Police Log: Exposed at Xtramart, Disturbance at Diego's, 5 Other Arrests

Meryl L. McGraw, 29, of 38 Stevens St., Tiverton, was arrested around 5:58 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16, for disturbing the peace and two drug possession charges.

McGraw had been staying at the Pineapple Inn and reportedly refused to pay her bill and vacate her room. The manager told police she had paid through Friday, but owed $40 for Saturday.

When police told her to pack her belongings and leave the room, reports said McGraw began yelling obscenities at the officers. She was arrested for disturbing the peace.

During a search of her belongings, police found several empty, used syringes, a syringe containing suspected heroin, a small glass marijuana pipe, a soda cap with suspected cocaine and a Clonazepam pill, reports said.

Extra Exposed at Xtramart

James L. Coppa, 49, of 20 Chapel St., Newport, was arrested around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16, for a second-offence indecent exposure charge.

Reports said an Xtra Mart employee complained that Coppa was exposing himself to her in the parking lot. When she yelled at him to leave, he reportedly made no attempt to cover himself and walked away.

Police were able to confirm the incident through surveillance footage.

He was stopped on Chapel Street, where he told police he had been home all evening.

Coppa was arrested last January for a similar incident at 7-Eleven.

Bathroom Break at Cumberland Farms

Darryl L. Turner, 47, of 15 Meeting St., Newport, was arrested around 9:50 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15, for disorderly conduct and urinating in public charges.

Police were dispatched to the Broadway Cumberland Farms for a report of a man urinating in the aisle. When told to leave, he reportedly refused and made inappropriate comments about an employee's breasts.

They were then dispatched back to the police station. Turner had entered the front lobby to use the bathroom. He was identified by the employee and arrested.

Disturbance at Diego's

Colton F. Hurley, 23, of 10 Easy St., Lanoka Harbor, NJ, was arrested around 11:20 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15, for a disorderly conduct charge.

According to police reports, a bartender and manager at Diego’s refused to serve him alcohol because his license was damaged. He then began yelling crude and offensive comments at the manager when she explained why he could not be served. He and the rest of the group then left the restaurant.

An employee told police he returned about 30 minutes later and went into a room with employees' personal belongings.

He asked an employee who the bartender was, and when she gave him his name, he allegedly told her, “Tell your friend to watch his back walking to his car tonight.” She reported him to police.

During questioning, Hurley told police he had overreacted when he made the comments.

DUI Arrests

Candice Marshall, 44, of 26 Smith Ave., Newport, was arrested around 1:15 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 17, for a first-offense DUI and refusal to submit to a chemical test.

Matthew E. Chausse, 35, of 175 Belleview Ave., Tiverton, was arrested around 1:27 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16, for DUI and refusal to submit to a chemical test charges.
