Each year, the department budgets around $20 million for winter weather management. That funding goes towards approximately 125,000 tons of salt, 10,000 tons of sand and 14,000 gallons on brine. It also pays for road preparation ahead of storms, maintaining equipment and other essential services to be winter weather ready, the department said.
