A story about a sick swan that approached Newport Firefighters for help Monday night, did not have a happy ending.
The swan approached Station 2 around 7:45 p.m., and the firefighters noticed its beak was injured. They called the DEM for help.
When the department arrived, the swan was shot with a .22 caliber to the back of the head, said the saddened fire fighters.
The DEM official stated the swan is an invasive species which DEM euthanizes if sick.
"All I can say it was swift," said the disappointed firefighter.
