Watch Out For Phone Scammers Posing As Newport Police Officers
Newport police say the scammers tell their victims they are being subpoenaed in order to steal people's information.
NEWPORT, RI — Newport police have urged the public to watch out for phone scams victimizing city residents.
Police said they have received recent reports of scammers posing as Newport police sergeants and lieutenants. The scammers tell their victims they are being subpoenaed in order to steal people's information.
There have also been reports that the caller is a "constable for the Newport Police Department."

"The Newport Police Department does not have any constables nor do we use the services of a constable," Newport police said in a Facebook post. "These calls are coming from numbers not associated with the Newport Police Department."
Anyone who receives a call of this nature should not give out any personal information and call Newport police at 401-847-1306 to report it.
