Woman Kidnapped in Newport, Held Hostage and Raped for Six Days by Portsmouth Man: Police

Police said Timothy Logan Haslam grabbed the woman from the Easton's Beach parking lot on July 2 and held her until she escaped on Friday.

Newport, RI — A Portsmouth man is facing rape, kidnapping and related charges for allegedly grabbing a woman from the Easton’s Beach parking lot and holding her against her will for six days last week while he repeatedly sexually assaulted her.

Timothy Logan Haslam, 57, of 2 North Drive, Portsmouth, is facing charges from both Newport and Portsmouth police in connection with the alleged crimes that came to an end when the victim escaped from a Seekonk hotel on Friday and told police that her ex-boyfriend had kidnapped her.

Newport police said they were contacted by Portsmouth police on Friday and notified of the investigation.

The victim was interviewed by detectives at the hospital where she was being treated for a broken arm suffered during a physical assault in Haslam’s white pickup truck as he drove her through Middletown after grabbing her at the beach, police said. Police said she tried to jump out of a moving car to get away.

She said the horror began when she was walking east on Memorial Boulevard on July 2 when she saw Haslam following her.

He followed her to the parking lot where he got out of his truck, approached her, and called her a “slut” and a ”whore” before grabbing her and “threw her into his vehicle against her will,” according to a police report.

Haslam then drove the victim to his house in Portsmouth where he raped her and “kept her hostage for several days, not allowing her to leave,” police said.

He then brought her to the hotel in Seekonk before she managed to escape, according to police.

Haslam was arrested in Saturday by Seekonk police, who are also pressing charges in connection with the case. They are charging him with aggravated assault.

Portsmouth police charged Haslam with domestic simple assault, domestic sexual assault, violating a no-contact order and larceny.

Newport police charged him with domestic kidnapping and violating a no-contact order.

Haslam could face additional charges from Middletown police for the assault that broke the victim’s arm.

After appearing before a judge in Massachusetts over the weekend, Haslam appeared in Newport District Court on Monday to answer to the local charges. He is currently being held without bail at the Adult Correctional Institutions and is due to return to court on July 19 for a status conference.
