North Kingstown Man Arrested In Connecticut After Crash

Jonathan R. Ilarraza, 26, fled from police after crashing a stolen car, Stonington police allege. He had accomplices.

NORTH KINGSTOWN, RI-- Jonathan R. Ilarraza, 26, was arrested by Stonington, Conn., police Monday at 2:34 p.m. after he allegedly crashed a car on Downer Street in the Pawcatuck area and tried to run away. Hopkinton police had identified the car as one that had been stolen from North Kingstown earlier. According to Capt. Todd Olson in Stonington, police also arrested two other people. Robert W. Abercrombie, 48, of Providence, was also in the car, and Jan Poirier, 24, was arrested at the scene. Her address is unknown. She is being charged with threatening an officer. The other two will be charged with larceny, and other charges may be pending.

The incident started when police were alerted about the stolen car. The caller said it was parked on Downer Street. Police cars were on the way when an off-duty officer "from another jurisdiction" went over to the car. The driver tried to take off. The officer fired his gun and hit the car. The driver lost control attempting to turn south on Garden Street and slammed into a concrete wall.

Police notified residents by text message to shelter in place, given the fear the two men might be armed. After a search, police caught them. Poirier was arrested at the scene after she allegedly made threats.

The duo tried to drive away in a 2018 silver Nissan Murano, but a store employee pulled open the driver's side door. Ilarraza put the car in reverse, police allege, which knocked the employee down. (He was hurt on the leg, wrist, knee and hand.) Then the car sped off towards Connecticut.

Police ran the plates and determined the car was stolen from North Kingstown.

Ilarraza, of North Kingstown, is also wanted for Domestic Breaking and Entering in North Kingstown.

"Warrants are also pending from Rhode Island State Police for receiving stolen goods," Hopkinton Police said.
