- A former Catholic priest assigned to northern Rhode Island parishes faces three counts of first-degree sexual assault. A statewide grand jury in May indicted Edward Kelley, 79, alleging he committed the assaults in 1983 in North Smithfield, The Providence Journal reported Friday. Kelley served at churches in North Smithfield, Pawtucket, Woonsocket and Cumberland.(Associated Press)
- R.I. General Treasurer Seth Magaziner is suing Mark Zuckerberg. Magaziner is accusing Facebook executives of hurting the state's retirement funds and causing "significant damage" to Facebook investors. Following the Cambridge Analytica security breach scandal, Facebook agreed to pay a $5 billion fine. The Employees Retirement System of Rhode Island holds 151,533 shares of Facebook, Magaziner said. - A federal moratorium on evictions during the pandemic is set to expire Saturday, and the impact could be significant. In Providence County, an estimated 13,894 (12.7 percent) of tenant households were behind on their rent in July, according to a new analysis. (Patch)
