Former Student Arrested At Portsmouth High Tuesday

PORTSMOUTH, RI -- Police made an arrest Tuesday morning at Portsmouth High after a 22-year-old former student allegedly forced his way into the building around 9 a.m. Marcus Schlip was carrying a backpack with a "large military style knife" inside, police said. He initially tried to get inside through the new gym; but when a teacher tried to send him to the main entrance, he punched her in the face, pushed the door open and kicked the teacher several times, police allege.

Police located Schlip in the main office and arrested him. He been charged with assault on schoolteachers, school officials or other school department employees; possession of a knife in a commission of a crime; and disturbance of public assemblies generally.

The teacher, 27, was treated at the school and then taken to the hospital for evaluation.
