The following information was provided by the Portsmouth Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Portsmouth police made the following arrests in past three days.

  • Brian Leal, 21, of Bristol, was arrested on April 10 at 3 a.m. and charged with driving under the influence (DUI), refusal to submit to a chemical test and, now a civil violation, possession of marijuana, one ounce or less. Police stopped a vehicle on Boyd's Lane at Viking Drive for a missing headlight. The officer smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle. The operator had blood-shot eyes, according to police. A search found marijuana in a glass jar. The operator failed a field sobriety test and, after being transported to the police station, allegedly refused to submit to a chemical test.
  • Jennifer Machado, 18, of Middletown, a passenger in Leal's vehicle, was also arrested and charged with possession of alcohol by an underage person. She was also charged with a civil violation of possession of marijuana, one ounce or less. Police found a small amount of marijuana inside her pockets after asking her to empty them. Police also discovered two nips of alcohol, including a nip of Jack Daniels and a 50 ml. nip of Kinky Liqueur inside her purse.
  • Kyle DeMello, 20, of Middletown, was arrested on April 8,at noon and charged with shoplifting. He was also wanted on a bench warrant from Second District Court on a larceny charge. The arrest stemmed from an incident on Feb. 20 at 3 p.m. Clements' Market reported that an individual left with full pockets of items without paying. Employees saw a bag of grapes hanging out of DeMello's sweatshirt. He turned over the grapes in the parking lot, but was believed to have more. He left before police arrived. Middletown police picked him up on April 8 and turned him over to Portsmouth police.
