Bay State Woman Injured In I-95 Accident Early Sunday Morning: Providence Woman Charged

A 38-year-old woman was critically injured when she was struck by a car. She was standing in the breakdown lane next to her car.

PROVIDENCE, RI—A Massachusetts woman was critically hurt early Sunday morning when she was struck by a car in the breakdown lane on I-95, state police said. The accident happened around 2:20 a.m. in the southbound lane near the Eddy Street exit. The 38-year-old injured woman, whose name is not being released, was standing in the breakdown lane next to her car's passenger door.

A Providence woman, driving South on I-95, lost control and went into the breakdown lane. Yiranis Liz, 30, of was arrested and charged with:

Driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs, blood-alcohol concentration unknown, pending the results of blood test;

Driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs, serious bodily injury resulting; and

Operating to endanger, serious bodily injury resulting.

She was also cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test; laned roadway violations; failure to maintain reasonable and prudent speeds; and operating a motor vehicle without evidence of insurance.

Both Liz and the victim went to Rhode Island Hospital. Liz was later arraigned on the charges and released on personal recognizance.

A passenger in the injured woman's car was not hurt.

The crash remains under investigation by troopers from the Rhode Island State Police Lincoln Woods Barracks, the Detective Bureau and the Collision Reconstruction Unit, state police said.
