Boston Celtics Honor Providence Teen As A 'Hero Among Us'

PROVIDENCE, RI — The Boston Celtics honored a Rhode Island teen as a "Hero Among Us" for donating his hair and money for a child experiencing medical hair loss.

Providence resident Emilio Santana, 14, received the honor during the Boston Celtics home game against the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday.

"In 2018, after meeting a young girl who had lost her hair during cancer treatment, then 8-year-old Emilio Santana made a heartfelt decision to help in his own unique way," A Boston Celtics spokesperson said. "Inspired to support others in similar situations, Santana began growing his hair with the intention of donating it. Despite occasional teasing from peers, he remained dedicated to his mission. Now at 14-years-old, Santana has donated 24 inches of his hair and raised over $1,500 to cover the cost of creating a wig for a child experiencing medical hair loss."

The Celtics' "Hero Among Us" program is in its 27th year, recognizing "outstanding individuals who have made exceptional and lasting contributions to their communities."
