CHOP Set to Transform the Culinary Scene in Downtown Providence
This innovative restaurant will serve as a practical training ground for students from the Genesis Center, offering hands-on experience

The Culinary Hub of Providence (CHOP) is poised to make its grand debut in downtown Providence, promising to bring a unique dining experience to the city. Located at the iconic Providence Public Library, CHOP is a celebration of food, culture, and community.
CHOP is an initiative by the Genesis Center, spearheaded by its president Shannon Carroll and CHOP Chief Operating Officer Chef Joshua Riazi, designed to strengthen the financial sustainability of the Genesis Center’s culinary training program. This innovative restaurant will serve as a practical training ground for students from the Genesis Center, offering hands-on experience in a real-world setting.
"For years, we have envisioned incorporating a social enterprise component into our workforce training programs,” said Carroll. “With the launch of CHOP, this vision is finally taking shape. CHOP not only enhances our ability to offer hands-on, real-world experience to our culinary students but also expands access and opportunity for the people we serve. This initiative embodies our commitment to empowering individuals through education and providing them with the tools they need to achieve economic independence."

CHOP will be the first employer site for students enrolled in the Genesis Center’s state-accredited apprenticeship program. This comprehensive 2,000-hour training allows students to "earn while they learn," providing them with the opportunity to develop their skills while gaining practical work experience.
“At CHOP, our students gain invaluable on-the-job training that extends beyond the kitchen,” said Chef Joshua Riazi. “We’re equipping them with the skills needed for a range of careers in the hospitality industry, from bar and beverage management to hospitality operations and entrepreneurship.”

The menu at CHOP will showcase global flavors with a local twist, highlighting fresh, locally sourced ingredients that reflect the distinct seasons of Rhode Island. Guests can look forward to an array of dishes that celebrate the diverse cultural backgrounds of the culinary students, creating a memorable dining experience.
CHOP will feature an active Chef Demo Bar, where guests can watch live cooking demonstrations and participate in tastings. Special events will bring renowned guest chefs and influential members of the food community to share their talent and expertise, making every visit to CHOP an exciting culinary adventure.
“We are thrilled to open CHOP and invite the community to join us in this exciting new venture,” said Chef Joshua Riazi. “Our goal is to not only provide exceptional food but also to support and empower the next generation of culinary professionals.”
