CHOP: A Visionary Culinary Space Designed by KITE Architects

Designed by KITE Architects, the space is a testament to creating environments that balance aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability.

The Culinary Hub of Providence (CHOP) is set to redefine dining in downtown Providence with its grand debut. Located in the historic Providence Public Library, CHOP blends modern functionality with historical charm.

CHOP is an initiative by the Genesis Center, spearheaded by its president Shannon Carroll and CHOP Chief Operating Officer Chef Joshua Riazi, designed to strengthen the financial sustainability of the Genesis Center’s culinary training program. This innovative restaurant will serve as a practical training ground for students from the Genesis Center, offering hands-on experience in a real-world setting.

A Vision Realized

KITE Architects envisioned CHOP as a functional and visually appealing space, serving as a training ground for future culinary professionals while offering a unique dining experience. The goal was to craft an environment that supports learning and adaptability, reflecting the dynamic nature of the hospitality industry. By designing a training center that operates as a stylish restaurant, KITE Architects aimed to provide trainees with real-world exposure.

Designing for Flexibility

A key challenge was ensuring CHOP could adapt to various functions throughout the day. The space needed to transition from a morning coffee shop to a lunch café and into an evening bar, while also accommodating special events. The solution was versatile design elements, such as a long bar with multiple zones and a spacious dining area that can be easily reconfigured. This flexibility ensures that CHOP remains inviting and functional at any time of day.

Celebrating Historical Beauty

Sustainability and historical preservation were central to KITE Architects' design for CHOP. The design highlights the existing beauty of the historic library structure, incorporating exposed brick, concrete floors, and decor made from discarded library books. Natural daylight floods the interior, enhancing the welcoming atmosphere and reducing energy consumption.

Innovative Features for Engagement

CHOP is designed to engage both diners and trainees with its innovative features. A standout element is the demonstration station at the bar, allowing guest chefs to perform cooking demonstrations. This feature enhances the dining experience and extends the educational reach of the space.
